Welcome to UCLA Theatre!

Over the summer, I had the great privilege of studying theatre in Avignon, France: an opportunity made by the generous Dean Teri Schwartz. While there, I simply experienced theatre in a new way; I became captivated by their harsh gestures, bold voices, and piercing set designs. On my way back home, I felt simply inspired to create an artistic response to the theatre of France; thus Lydia, in all its fashion, is my response. The story of Lydia is sophisticated and intricate. It’s been designed to challenge our perception of love, power, and faith; whether consciously or unconsciously, I believe we face these three terms every day. And as an artist, I look to capitalize on these terms with music, text, and dynamic movement. The reason is simple, an honest connection that’s birthed and expressed through our bodies.

On another note, it’s always been a passion of mine to use my platform as a way to share my Chicano/a culture, and to produce stories from those who live with a physical or mental conditions in my community.

We must embrace all people. and must do so with honest integrity, for that is one way we can make a change, a way to understand all walks of life.

This mindset has lead me to direct beautiful and heartbreaking stories in cultures such as Jewish, Greek, German, and Afro-American settings. And on that note, I’m please to announce an all working Latinx cast, and we are excited to share our story of Lydia.
